How to Select a Qualified Surgeon -

Plastic surgery includes both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is performed to improve physical function or to minimize disfigurement caused by accidents, disease or birth defects.

Cosmetic surgery seeks to reshape a physical feature for the purpose of improving appearance only.

A plastic surgeon, in the true sense of the word, is highly trained in both of these categories though, over time, is likely to find himself specializing in one or the other.

Unfortunately, any licensed medical doctor can hang a sign
advertising “cosmetic surgeon.”

He is often a physician who has received training in one area,
such as ophthalmology (eye) or dermatology (skin), then later
chooses to practice cosmetic surgery.

He may have obtained his training from weekend seminars or
studied briefly under someone, but lacks the proper education,
training and experience necessary to minimize risks and maximize
the likelihood of good results.

With so many doctors now performing cosmetic surgery, it is
important to consider the experience of the surgeon.

Is The Surgeon Board Certified

Because board certified is recognized these days as such an important credential, more and more doctors are using them in the Yellow Pages listings and other forms of advertising.

This goes not only for offline advertising which also includes TV but online advertising as well.

Unfortunately, “Board Certified“ doesn’t always mean the same thing.

Learn the difference between the terms or you could wind up in the hands of someone that is poorly qualified.

What You Want…Bottom Line…
You want to select a surgeon who is certified by the “American Board of Plastic Surgery”. Period, end of story!

This is not the same as the ” American Board of Cosmetic Surgery” or any number of other similar boards which, although their name sounds impressive, actually carry very little weight or no merit.

The “American Board of Plastic Surgery” is the only board recognized by the accrediting groups supported by the American Medical Association.
